Enforcement
Effective enforcement of waste legislation and regulations is crucial to managing our waste in a way that minimises impacts on health, on the environment and on local communities. The regulation of all the functions that ensure waste is collected, recycled, reused and recovered properly and safely depends on both EU and national legislation.
Enforcing this legislation is the responsibility of local authorities and of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In addition the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government (DECLG) and the National Transfrontier Shipment (TFS) Office are both involved in enforcement. Within these government offices and agencies there are dedicated teams of waste enforcement personnel.
